"Sonic The Hedgehog 3" Review": A Genre Buffet of Family Fun
With it’s third entry into the franchise, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has it’s footing. It’s full camp. It’s a genre buffet that focuses more on its vignettes than answering plot hole questions. It just might be the most fun you’ll have in theaters with your family this holiday season!
Building on the events of Sonic The Hedgehog 2, the film finds the new Wachowski family with Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) trying to get away for some R&R with Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter). After a hedgehog named Shadow (Keanu Reeves) is released from his suspended state after fifty years, that peace the family is attempting to get comes to an immediate end. Team Sonic is whisked to Tokyo to try and bring Shadow under control, if at all possible.

The big question is who released Shadow with what looks like Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey) tech? It’s quickly revealed that Ivo has been enjoying telenovelas and getting the Thor post Infinity War treatment (big gut). Enter Gerald Robotnik (Jim Carrey), Ivo’s long lost grandfather. From there, it’s off to the races to stop a world ending machine and Jim Carrey having as much fun as he can on screen.

The film continues to build out the video game world, showcasing character’s skills and power ups. It also noticeably shifts in genre in its dialogue, cinematography and pacing throughout the film. The opening setup is full of action, it moves into a kid friendly horror moment, a musical dance number, comedy and drama. This could seem disjointed at first glance, but for anyone who played the game on Sega, we know that there were different levels with different styles of gameplay and music. It’s this not so subtle change in cinematic genres that confirm the film is self-aware. In fact, there is a joke about making a flash drive work after blowing on it much like we did with game cartridges.

Jim Carrey said that he came out of retirement for this film because he needed to pay bills. Hopefully he keeps overspending so we’ll see him future films because he’s so much fun to watch as both Ivo and Gerald Robotnik. Each character is fully developed, but they bounce off of each other in comedic fashion as only Carrey can do. Where the first two films were about building family, Keanu Reeves’ Shadow has baggage to deal with in regards to the family he lost. So the franchise keeps revolving around family dynamics while adding more characters to this world.
So make sure you stick around for the post credit scene. This is by no means an Academy Award winning children’s film. It’s fun, nostalgic for those who played the game or watch/ed the shows. It’s a good time at the movies for the family!

"Inside Out 2" Review: Another Great Probe Into Our Minds!
Inside Out will always be a special film for me because it was the first film I took my daughter to see when she was almost three years old. The Oscar winning film was a great movie that dealt with emotions and how we use them. Nearly ten years later, Riley (Kensington Tallman) is thirteen, my daughter is almost twelve and this movie is so in touch with that thing called puberty it’s scary!
We catch back up with Riley as she is still playing hockey and dominating the rink. She is going to high school next year and her bond with her best friends, Grace (Grace Lu) and Bree (Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green), couldn’t be stronger! Or could it? As the trio goes to camp, Riley learns that they will be going to different schools in the fall which will break up the band. This information, coupled with the onset of puberty, creates new emotions that come to the forefront of her mind.
Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Anger (Lewis Black) are still at the helm of the controls of Riley’s mind, but new emotions are introduced that will challenge for the throne: Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adele Exarchopoulos) (think “play it cool” mentality), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), and, the leader of them all, Anxiety (Maya Hawke). Anxiety proves to be akin to fear in some ways but her role is to predict what could happen to Riley and either stop it, avoid it, react to it or move her towards it if the idea seems good to her.
The old and new emotions have a conflict that sends the old crew on an adventure. Along the way we meet some new characters and concepts like sarcasm being a literal chasm that makes anything nice sound bad and a stream of consciousness being a stream with whatever Riley is thinking in it. Perhaps the funniest new characters are Bloofy (Ron Funches) and Pouchy (James Austin Johnson), a duo similar to a Barney-like character that Riley secretly still likes watching.
Writers Meg LeFauve, Dave Holstein, and Kelsey Mann do a wonderful job of setting this new world up for the viewer inside Riley’s head as they interact with what’s going on outside of her body. It’s easy to follow and it’s the journey that makes this movie another winner! There is something so universal about the pressures of trying to fit in, choosing between making new friends or being loyal to old ones, and not really knowing what’s going on inside. Pixar usually has a way of speaking to adults while entertaining kids and that is on full display here.
Inside Out 2 is a winner because it’s thought provoking in addressing how the coming of age passage can be difficult, awkward and beautiful all at once! It doesn’t sugar coat mental health but delivers a spoonful of sugar with the medicine the doctor ordered to address it with laughs and a few tear jerking moments. Hopefully we don’t have to wait another decade for the next stage of Riley’s life, but this is certainly one to take the family to see in theaters!

"Elemental" Review: This isn't Pixar's Best
Animation can be a great storytelling tool! When done well, filmmakers can use the genre to express emotions and show things that can’t be done in live-action. With “Elemental”, the ambiguity of anthropomorphism makes for a confusing story, weird relationships and complex storytelling that should otherwise be simple.
Set in a place called Elemental City, the inhabitants consist of fire, wind, earth and water people. Fire is the one element that is somewhat ostracized due to their ability to destroy most elements. Ember (Leah Lewis) is a second generation fire element of the city. Her father (Ronnie Del Carmen) has worked hard to keep his store, The Fireplace, up and running. His goal is to pass it on to Ember. Ember is stuck between wanting to honor her father’s wishes and wanting to find out what she loves. The frustration of being stuck in the middle produces an uncontrollable fireball that Ember has to release. On one such occasion, she retreats to the basement to blow off steam only to have Wade (Mamoudou Athie) come through a leaky pipe. Wade is a city inspector who can’t let the violations he sees in the basement go. So the rest of the film is about the shenanigans this odd couple gets into as Ember tries to save her dad’s shop from being shut down.
There are clear rules in this world. Fire can boil water, water can replenish Earth, water can also douse a flame, etc. So a romantic relationship between fire and water shouldn’t work. Pixar is usually known for being able to mix social messages with their films but there are a few too many messages going on here. There is a generational understanding issue, a xenophobia issue, a class issue, and frankly, an ethnicity issue. Ember’s parents seem to have an Asian accent and exhibit the traditional values of an Asian family. (This is based on director, Peter Sohn’s, life.) So rather than focusing on the elements being blank canvases without intricate human qualities, dealing with universal problems, this feels like the elements are geared after a certain group of people. This is fine when you make clear lines, but the anthropomorphism makes it hazy. There are too many things that writers John Hoberg, Kat Likkel and Brenda Hsueh are trying to tackle. Children won’t care but adults will scratch their heads.
This does feel like new territory for Pixar as the relationship between Ember and Wade feels like young adults falling in love. It’s hard to know their age, but context clues put this in unchartered territory. Perhaps the best part of the film is the visuals that are served to the audience. In fact, the song “Steal The Show” by Ari Leff and Thomas Newman does just that in a beautiful montage of Ember and Wade seeing each other’s uniqueness against the backdrop of Elemental City. It’s a great number and captures what Pixar does best.
This isn’t Pixar’s best in their catalogue. Outside of the song, this isn’t very memorable and leaves a few more questions than answers. Yet, there are moments of Pixar brilliance. No need to rush out for this one parents.

"Hotel Transylvania: Transformania" Review- May The Franchise Rest In Peace
Hotel Transylvania: Transformania puts the nail in the franchise’s coffin and not a single tear was shed. It’s another film that can bring the family together, but it’s not very inspired. The stakes are logical, it builds on prior films, but there’s no special magic here.
The one thing that Drac (Brian Hull) has always held against Jonathan (Andy Samberg) whether seriously or in jest, is the fact that he isn’t a monster. So it would make sense that when Drac is ready to give his famous hotel to Mavis (Selena Gomez), realizing that Jonathan would help run it as well puts Drac on edge. In fact, he gets cold feet and states to Johnathan that he won’t be able to allow them to inherit the hotel due to a real estate clause that calls for the hotel to be monster owned.
What’s a loving, wanting to impress dad, slightly insecure son going to do to ensure the hotel is bequeathed to Mavis and himself? He talks to Van Helsing (Jim Gaffigan) about being turned into a monster. Of course, things don’t go as planned and we get to spend the remaining running time in a search for the cure for the monsters who have become humans and the human who has become a monster.
It’s hard not to like the good-hearted nature of the ensemble. The addition of voice actor Brian Hull, in replacement of Adam Sandler as Drac, is like a cat in the Matrix. You know something is a bit off if you really listen to Drac’s voice, but otherwise it’s a seamless handoff of the character. Overall, this is a slapstick comedy that earns its sympathy chuckles.
If you’re of a certain age, you remember that when movies would go straight to video it usually meant they weren’t very good. We’re living in an age when movies that go to streaming instead of theaters or a simultaneous release have the same meaning. This wasn’t a Toy Story 3 bow that felt like an end of a franchise and was done beautifully. Instead, this was squeezing the franchise for the last bit of blood it had left. May it rest in peace. "Sing 2": Sophomore Jitters But Still A Good Time!
Sing 2 suffers from the sophomore jitters. The film goes bigger than Sing but relies on the same “Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) must prove himself” ideal that we saw in its predecessor. That said, it’s still a fun time in the theaters with the family.
We already know the main players, so Sing 2 throws us into the group’s latest performance. It’s a beautiful rendition of Alice in Wonderland that showcases Meena (Tori Kelly), Ash (Scarlett Johansson), and Johnny (Taron Egerton) in their own ways. Buster, however, wants to go bigger! He has a dream of taking his team to perform in the entertainment center of the world, Redshore City, but not just anyone can get a show in this Las Vegas style city. You have to get the approval of Mr. Crystal (Bobby Cannavale), a wolf who seems to be head of the mob in Redshore.
After sneaking their way into an audition for Mr. Crystal, Moon and associates have Crystal’s backing with a blank check under one condition: they promise to have rock star-turned recluse Clay Calloway (Bono) in the show. The only problem is, they don’t know where Calloway is themselves. Thus, this starts a race to create a unique show fit for the high expectations of a Redshore City show, Mr. Crystal’s intimidating persona, and getting Calloway to come out of seclusion.
The theme of overcoming the odds and believing in yourself is front and center again. Which is great for kids and families. However, getting to the point that the team is seeing their dreams come true in the race to pull off an amazing show is based on Moon lying his way into that position. The film never addresses this and thus there is a conflict of morals in the messaging. “Hey kids, you can do anything you put your mind to, even if you don’t tell the truth to get there along the way!” If there is a Sing 3, which there very well could be, writer/director Garth Jennings, needs to rethink Buster’s constant need to lie and somehow successfully pull off tasks. Life doesn’t work that way.
That big issue aside, the movie is fun and fast moving. A special shoutout has to be given to the Animation Department and Patrick Delage, the animation director. Sing 2 essentially is a movie that showcases a broadway style theatrical show and the animators nail it! From behind the scenes to the set design, everything looks and feels like a big theatrical show.
New characters, Porsha Crystal (Halsey), Suki (Chelsea Peretti) and Nooshy (Letitia Wright) are fun to watch and worth mentioning. Porsha is Mr. Crystal’s daughter who can sing like an angel but can’t act to save her life, forcing the Moon to choose between talent and pleasing Mr. Crystal. Suki is Mr. Crystal’s chief of staff of sorts whose animated bob and wardrobe is worth studying in and of itself in terms of character design. Nooshy is a street cat that has the performing skills that can’t be taught, or maybe they can if she can help Johnny.
The stakes are higher, sets are bigger and better, and the songs are just as fun as they were in Sing. My kiddos watched the screener I received five times within three days. I kid you not. So the kids will love the film! It’s a good time at the movies this holiday season!

"Encanto" Review: Disney Has Another One!
My initial thought as Encanto started was that it was a Columbian version of The Incredibles, but I quickly realized that was an unfair judgement and cheap comparison. Instead, the film is a beautiful statement on family, the gifts/talents we’re all born with, and a fresh cultural perspective that Disney does earnestly. With catchy musical sequences, this is guaranteed to be another Disney classic!
The Madrigal family has been imbued with special, magical gifts since matriarch, Abuela Alma (Maria Cecilia Botero) escaped to Colombia. Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) gives us our eyes into the family. In fact, she introduces us to all of her family members after village children ask her what her gift is. Luisa (Jessica Darrow) is super strong, Isabela (Diane Guerrero) can make beautiful flowers grow, Camilo (Rhenzy Feliz) is a shape shifter, Pepa (Carolina Gaitan) controls the weather and the list goes on. The only issue is, Maribel doesn’t have a gift.
It’s been years since the last time a gift was given out and tonight is Antonio’s (Ravi Cabot-Conyers) turn to receive. While Antonio receives the gift of speaking to animals, Maribel has a vision of the house starting to fall apart. This alarms Abuela, who is already on edge. With the weight of not having a gift on her shoulders, Maribel takes it as a personal mission to figure out what’s going on with the house and why the Encanto seems to be on the fritz.
What’s fascinating here is that Maribel authentically does not have a gift like the rest of her family. Thus the film spends time analyzing what it means to feel like an outsider in your family. It shows the pressure that Maribel’s sisters, Isabela and Luisa, are enduring. Luisa always gets the job done and takes on literal and figurative weight without question. Isabela is told that she is the perfect granddaughter and Abuela drills it home. When you strip back the layers, you start to see that Abuela’s trauma of losing her husband and not having a fairytale life has become the vision she has for Isabela. This vision is a box that Isabela is trapped in. So while Encanto is an awesome music filled, adventure, it addresses very real and deep issues we can see in our own family.
It’s hard to choose which song will be your favorite as there are so many instant classics! Mirabel is easy to fall in love with as a kind-hearted character seeking to keep her family together while dealing with her own insecurities. Encanto is easily the best animated film out this year! Go see it in theaters or stream it on Disney +!

"Soul" Review: The Reflection We Need In 2020
Pixar has a way with giving us films that speak to children, the inner child in adults, and adults. Their latest film, “Soul”, hits all three. While it has its moments of bloat and overly-complex narrative, there’s no doubt that it will leave you thinking about your life and the journey we all walk in finding our purpose.
Jamie Foxx voices Joe Gardner, a band teacher who has been waiting for his big break as a musician. He spends his time like most people do who aren’t working their dream job. He works at school, tutors after school to make ends meet, and plays gigs in his off time. So when he finally gets the opportunity to play piano for Dorothea Williams (Angela Bassett) he’s beyond ecstatic! Blinded by enthusiasm he misses the open man hole he walks into while talking on the phone.
Fresh out of his body, Joe is in a long line full of people going to The Great Beyond, but feeling that he was just about to finally make it, he fights to get out of impending doom. His actions land him in The Great Before, a place where souls are trained before diving to Earth to get a body and pursue their purpose in life. As Joe tries to find a loophole to get back to Earth himself, he’s paired up as a mentor for 22 (Tina Fey), a soul who does everything she can to not go to Earth. Amazingly, everything mentioned above is in the trailer.
If you can get past what feels like a seriously hard attempt to create a beautiful, bright new world that still addresses large issues like Pixar did previously with “Inside Out”, the bones of finding out our purpose in life are solid. Foxx’s Joe Gardner is a kind man with enough of a chip on his shoulder to make him oblivious to the truth that he matters to his community and has a good life. The film analyzes what makes a life “good” and worth living through the eyes of 22. Simultaneously, we see a refresher for Joe as he is able to see the world as 22 sees it.
“Soul” gives us Pixar’s first movie centered around a black character. Like “The Princess Frog”, Joe spends a considerable amount of time outside of his body, but fortunately at least half of the time we see an animated black lead. In fact, Pixar nails a lot of black culture in this film. From the jazz players (notably Angela Bassett as Dorothea) to Joe’s mother’s (Phylicia Rashad) seamstress shop, screenwriters Pete Docter, Mike Jones, and Kemp Jones hit the nuances that are uniquely black vernacular while still universal themes of connection and love. A beautifully captured scene where Joe gets his haircut in the barbershop is equal parts funny and true to life. The barbershop represents a space of education, humor, and camaraderie for black boys and men where conversations can go from the basketball game to how to be a better father in an instant. It’s so fluid with the rest of the film you could miss it, but I appreciated being able to ask my son if it looked familiar and he give a resounding “Yes!”.
We’ve come to have high expectations of Pixar Animation Studios and “Soul” won’t let you down. While it may not be as moving and profound as “Inside Out”, the film still poses big questions in an animated movie. While it doesn’t answer where we come from or where we go after life in our body ends, it does make you think about what you do while you’re living. In a tumultuous year like 2020, “Soul” is right on time to help us focus on what’s most important!

Sonic The Hedgehog: Didn't Disappoint!
One of the most influential childhood characters makes his long awaited spin jump from our gaming consoles onto the big screen. I think it's safe to say that when we saw the first draft of the hero’s look last year, it made us feel like it’d be okay to skip this one; but the famous blue hedgehog sped through those concerns and didn't disappoint.
The movie is the origin story of Sonic (Ben Schwartz) living on earth. The lonely hedgehog accidentally creates a power outage that ultimately brings unwanted attention. The government hires Dr. Robotnic (Jim Carrey) to investigate the cause of the catastrophe. Once he realizes that Sonic is the culprit, Robotnic plans to capture Sonic and use him as research for personal gains and world domination. As Sonic plans to get out of dodge, he finds himself in a dilemma which forces him to stay on earth to find his famed rings. While being chased by Dr. Robotnic, Sonic finds a friend in Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) and they go on a quest to find his rings with multiple mishaps along the way.
This movie brought me back to sitting in front of my Sega Genesis for hours and tuning into the cartoon as a kid. If you’re a fan of Sonic, you will feel engaged and nostalgic. There are numerous easter eggs in this film, so keep your eyes peeled to find them.
There are some instances in the movie that feel off in the edit and acting, but they find their way back to these scenes making sense. Director Jeff Fowler did a good job of bringing this film to fruition (especially with the Sonic updates) with his vision. The movie had some positive messages for the kid in all of us involving believing in yourself and the importance of friends. Jim Carrey is stand out as Dr. Robotnic. His character development gave us a flashback to the animated and over the top Carrey we grew to love in Ace Ventura and The Mask. The movie’s soundtrack is another nuance that tied the movie together well. Honestly, I thought the film could have done well as a PG13 and had more action but as a PG rating, it's up to par and has something for everyone to enjoy. It'll be money well spent if you take the kids and I think Sonic will be around for years to come.

"Dolittle" Review: Do Little To See This One!
Dolittle is an example of a film that tries to save itself in post-production when it should have done it at the script level. Sometimes a known franchise name isn’t worthy of the dust being blown off of it. Well, a $175,000,000 budget with a dismal return on investment just may teach Universal Pictures the lesson!
After losing his wife, Dr. John Dolittle (Robert Downey Jr.) has become a recluse. Far from the famed doctor who could speak to animals and help the world, he lives alone (no humans) with some of his four legged friends in a sanctuary given to him by Queen Victoria. When the queen turns ill, a royal emissary named Rose (Carmel Laniado), calls on the doctor to save the queen. In the midst of the visit from Rose, Tommy Stubbins (Harry Collett), a “force sensitive animal whisperer”, brings Dr. Dolittle a squirrel he accidentally shot. Enamored by Dolittle’s ability to speak with the animals around him, Tommy wants to be Dolittle’s apprentice.
The threat of losing his home due to a clause in a contract forces Dolittle out of his self-imposed retirement. The adventure takes him, his new apprentice and his animal friends across seas to dangerous islands full of bandits and a dragon. Wait, a dragon!? You thought this was a Victorian era period piece? Of course it’s a fantasy, comedy, adventure…honestly, I don’t know what it wants to be.
The storyline and script is muddled enough, but it’s not the only thing that’s muddled. Downey Jr.’s whispery accent is one for the record books! It’s hard to understand what he’s saying as he does his best-worst Jack Sparrow impression. The accent doesn’t accentuate the character and makes for an already difficult view with the amount of ADR (Automated Dialog Replacement) that seemed to have gone on in this film. There are so many moments when characters are speaking with their backs to the camera or the editing quickly cuts around what they’re saying to mask their faces.
It’s movies like Dolittle that give January releases its storied rep. It never fails that plenty of duds get dropped in the beginning of the year as we anxiously await to hear what the best films coming out of Sundance are, who will win an Oscar and move into Spring. I hope everyone in the cast and crew got paid upfront, because this movie won’t make a return on the back end! Since the writers and producers did little to make this film charming and proper, I suggest you do little to see it as well!

"Spies In Disguise" Review: Great Message In A Fun Ride
There’s only one spy that we really focus on in Spies In Disguise. While the name may be misleading, you don’t really need more people in a film when you have the charismatic charm of Will Smith. It’s a fun, comedic, espionage animation that manages to pack a great message without hammering it home.
Lance Sterling (Will Smith) is the world’s number one spy. He’s so good, bad guys know him by name and shutter when he’s in their presence. His fellow secret agents and colleagues at work do as well in that rockstar kind of way. This includes a nerdy tech officer named Walter (Tom Holland). Walter’s latest gadget, kitty glitter, gets Lance out of a sticky situation in the field, but not in the particular loud style that Lance is accustomed to and demands. So the two meet under circumstances in which Lance attempts to give Walter a stern talking to with walking papers. Simultaneously, Lance is moved on the agency’s wanted list after a doppelgänger steals a top secret killer drone.
Forced on the run to clear his name, Lance enlists the help of Walter, who just happens to have made an elixir that can change a person into a pigeon for spy purposes. With a new identity, Lance goes after the villain who stole his identity. Along the way, he learns the value of teamwork while Walter learns to believe in himself.
There’s a message at the heart of Spies In Disguise that needs to be heard by everyone. You have to look past Will Smith’s animated charm, DJ Khaled’s interesting voice acting debut, and the humor. Be yourself and it’s ok to be weird are a couple of the messages, but the deeper message we can gain from the movie is that we should try our best to solve conflict without destroying the person or entity we’re in conflict with. All of Walter’s gadgets are non-lethal but are still effective. After Joyless (Reba McEntire) tells Walter that he’s the future of the organization, I couldn’t help but think she was talking to the young kids in the audience. They have the ability to change the world, but it may be too late for the generations currently in power.
Spies In Disguise is an enjoyable time at the movies for families. You’ve definitely seen the character archetypes before, but its messages are worth hearing. If there is a better way to resolve conflict, choose it! At the very least you’ll learn that pigeons fly as fast as ninety miles an hour!

"Frozen II" Review: Disney, Let It Go!
Perhaps much like the theme of the movie, the Frozen franchise is in its autumn. Frozen II offers up a change in its characters, settings and gives a form of growth to all. Suffering from the sophomore slump, while this film offers big numbers and beautiful scenery, it doesn’t quite capture the magic of its predecessor because it’s too busy trying to stand in the shadow of it.
Picking up shortly after the original, Anna (Kristen Bell) and Queen Elsa (Idina Menzel) are leading the kingdom of Arendelle with Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and a newly permafrosted Olaf (Josh Gad) by their sides. Still trying to find herself, Elsa can’t ignore the voice she hears calling out to her. The voice may hold answers to the past as the kingdom tries to find answers to its future after the spirits of Earth, Fire, Wind and Water remove everyone from their homes.
Following the voice takes the group to an enchanted forest, which previously could not be entered by anyone. Inside they meet two factions that have been stuck inside for years and search for answers to the past to secure their future. Equipped with solo songs for each character throughout the film, like its songs, it’s forgettable. In fact, most of the songs help to move the struggling story along rather than being an extension of each characters’ inner feelings bursting out of them as musicals should do.
Another reason this outing isn’t as great as the last is because it’s missing heart and a true villain. The heart of the first film was the love between two sisters and the power that exists and can be cultivated from that love. Here, each character follows their own storyline and thus, as a whole, the movie suffers from meandering at times due to a seemingly forced narrative instead of the organic story in the first film. Without a true villain to physically go up against, these characters aren’t written well enough to display the true struggle of (wo)man vs. self that it whiffs at. There’s an opportunity for the film to explore what happens when a loved one smothers you with good intentions, but doesn’t realize they’re holding you back. There are decisions that some characters make that seem to be, well, out of character. It’s as though going from the beat sheet that five writers created for the story wasn’t quite filled in by Jennifer Lee’s screenplay.
On a positive note, Olaf steals the show as the lovable snowman who seems to be graduating from kindergarten to first grade metaphorically. He’s inquisitive about the world around him and his curiosity and zest for life is endearing. Olaf certainly provided most of the laughs that the children in the audience I saw the film with had.
Frozen II is an example of Disney’s machine over-cranking. While the film will undoubtedly be a money maker, lightning hasn’t struck twice. You won’t be able to name a single tune you heard upon exiting the theater. With glimpses of what could have been a solid, universal story, the writing is half baked and thus this film falls short. Your kids will love it though!

"Toy Story 4" Review: A Welcomed Finale...Hopefully
The announcement of Toy Story 4 was a shock to the system. Toy Story 3 was the perfect bow for the franchise. Pixar definitely can teach other studios how to keep a franchise going past its seemingly end. While the latest film has all the warm fuzzies, jokes, love, and deep storytelling that we’ve enjoyed in the past, I respectively and lovingly hope this is it.
The film picks up where the last left off but a few years down the line. Bonnie (Madeleine McGraw) is on her way to kindergarten. She still has Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack) and the rest of the gang. While she’s not old enough to stop playing with all of her toys, Bonnie certainly has her favorites, and Woody is not one of them. He gets left in the closet and collects dust bunnies while everyone else gets played with. Since Woody has always been the leader, this change is something he’s grappling with.
After her first day of school, Bonnie comes back with a new toy she created named Forky (Tony Hale). Understanding how much a toy means to the human he serves, Woody makes it his mission to keep Forky from throwing himself in the trash and getting himself lost. This includes making sure he stays safe on the family road trip in the RV, which of course is a task in itself.
What Pixar does better than most is explain life to us with child-like simplicity. They take us back to the basics time and time again. In this film, the big lesson is how we evolve in our relationships with loved ones. Woody has had his time with Andy and got a second chance with Bonnie, but what happens when our metaphorical Bonnie moves on? What do we do with the feeling of no longer being needed? How do you overcome your mentality of finding your self-worth in someone else or the opinion of others? There are all kinds of deep lessons that can be learned when you dig past the surface of what’s presented, and of course it’s laced with gags and humor.
The adventure the gang goes on is a fun and comical ride. There certainly was another story that could be told with Toy Story. The directors have stated that this is a fitting end for Woody and possibly the franchise but they thought it would be over after Toy Story 2. I hope they let this be the end because they have squeezed all the juice out of the lemon to create the delicious pitcher of lemonade that is the franchise. Perhaps Toy Story 3 left us thirsty for more, but Toy Story 4 is the confirmation that we’re good to go.

"Aladdin" Review: It's Got Faults But Disney Charm Too!
To have seen Aladdin in theaters in 1992 as a child means that you will go into Aladdin 2019 with ice in your veins! At least I did. How many times did I rewatch the VHS with my brother? How do I still know all the words to the songs? It was the Disney magic and the incredible voice acting of Robin Williams that made the film so special. Don’t worry ice kings and queens, Disney hasn’t lost its magic and Will Smith knows how to create a new genie instead of trying to fill those unmatchable genie shoes! It will take a while for the ice to melt, but this film is charming enough to do it.
Aladdin (Mena Massoud) is a street thief with dreams of being somebody. He’s got a good heart but no money in his pocket. After a chance encounter with Jasmine (Naomi Scott), the Princess of Agrabah, Aladdin is smitten but knows he doesn’t stand a chance with her as a lowly street rat. So when the nefarious Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) forces him to retrieve a lamp from the Cave of Wonders that happens to hold a powerful genie, Aladdin’s windfall is significant. Genie (Will Smith) can make all his wishes come true, or at least three of them.
That previous paragraph was for anyone who was born in the last seven years. The beloved classic tale hasn’t changed much, but co-writers John August and Guy Ritchie are wise enough to know that making a live action version of a classic means that you need to deviate a little. The minor changes that they make to the film are the right shift in a new direction. Disney princesses are a lot stronger than they used to be. Princess Jasmine is more defined as a person than she was in the past. She’s crafted into a tangible character who shows real leadership, a zest for life and courage. Genie and Aladdin’s relationship is a little more intertwined as Genie has the ability to take on a human form outside of his usual blue, legless shape.
The film must lean on the nostalgia of the classic film and songs though. It asks you to forgive the fact that Will Smith can’t sing and that the musical arrangements of many of the songs are a bit of a step down from the originals. Perhaps because three new lyricists worked on this with one of the original songwriter, Alan Menken. Mena Massoud feels like he was casted for the smile and energy that Aladdin has in the animated version, but it not for his musical talent. In fact, much of the film’s musical numbers sound like they should be on Broadway and director Guy Ritchie shoots them like he’s covering a stage play.
While the film has its eyebrow raising, cringeworthy moments, when songs aren’t being sung, the drama is universally touching. The life lessons of being yourself, speaking up for yourself, and doing right by other people is clear. The budding romance between Princess Jasmine and Aladdin has all the right Disney feels. So while it has its faults, the bold step to recreate Aladdin may prove to be worth it this weekend. It will certainly be a good time for families, and at least we’ll get to hear DJ Khaled the next time we’re in a Disney theme park!

"A Dog's Journey" Review: The Forrest Gump of Dog Movies
A Dog’s Journey is basically the Forrest Gump of dog movies. While Forrest ran through a part of our nation’s history, Bailey (voiced by Josh Gad) serves the same family through various doggy lives. Ultimately, it gives a child-like look into a few generations of one family’s life journey. It’s the exploration of the good, the bad and man’s best friend’s role in our lives that make this a cute (corny at times) family film.
Picking up where A Dog’s Purpose left off with a now adult Ethan (Dennis Quaid), the film begins with the turbulent relationship between Ethan, his wife Hannah (Marg Helgenberger) and their daughter-in-law, Gloria (Betty Gilpin). Gloria is living on the farm with their granddaughter CJ. While the grands are the loving grandparents anyone would want, Gloria detests feeling like she’s under their constant monitoring. She splits with CJ and not knowing where CJ is going, Ethan asks Bailey to watch over CJ as he takes his last breaths.
Throughout the film Bailey reincarnates as a different dog and whether he has a long stint with CJ or a brief encounter, he knows his purpose. Each life teaches him new tricks, while life teaches the steady adulting CJ (Kathryn Prescott) new lessons as well. Whether she has to learn how to thrive in the world without her father, an absentee mother, an abusive boyfriend, or that love may be found in her best friend Trent (Henry Lau), CJ experiences the growing pains we all have.
While this film has touching moments that may cause you to grab a tissue, it’s drawn out. There are so many fades to black or white throughout the film that signify a closing or opening to a new chapter in the story that you can get restless after the fourth reincarnation. When the major points of our lives are compacted into a film it can serve as a great opportunity to reflect or give you perspective. This film will allow you to consider your own journey and think about the four legged friend in your life that may have helped you along the way.

"UglyDolls" Review: Bless Its Ugly Wittle Heart!
STX Entertainment isn’t necessarily a household studio name, but it’s quickly growing its portfolio. Giving us recent films like The Upside, The Best of Enemies, and the forthcoming 21 Bridges, the studio is slowly making a name for itself. UglyDolls is their move into family friendly films and like any first outing it has its bumps. While the film has the spirit of Trolls, its execution is disjointed and poor pacing makes for a difficult watch at times, but bless it’s ugly heart if the messaging isn’t the positivity the world needs right now!
The film starts with a positivity drenched ballad led by Moxy (Kelly Clarkson). She tells the story of how living in the town of UglyVille is great. UglyVille is where dolls go after being separated from the “perfect” dolls on the assembly line in the sky. While all the defected dolls enjoy live in the Ville, Moxy dreams that everyday may be the day that she gets picked by a kid to live in the big world.
After seeing a new ugly doll come out of the tube in the mountain, Moxy decides she wants to see where the tube leads. She takes her friends Ugly Dog (Pitbull), Babo (Gabriel Iglesias), Wage (Wanda Sykes), and Luck Bat (Leehom Wang) along for the adventure. The crew eventually finds the Institute of Perfection, where all the good looking dolls are tested before going to the big world to meet their child. A doll named Lou (Nick Jonas) runs the show and sings brutally frank ballads about being perfect versus ugly. Most of the dolls at the institute are obsessed with perfection and Lou or hiding flaws as not to be shamed.
The heart of this film is about not being afraid to be who you are and let the things that make you who you are shine. The opening number is so beautiful and you can quickly see the imperfect dolls are brimming with talent and happier than the dolls at the institute. It’s a great message, even if it’s overt. Messaging aside, the film limps along from musical number to musical number. While casting tons of talented singers and comedians may be great for social media tags and posts for marketing the film, the acting talent and chemistry that Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake in Trolls can’t be found here. It feels more like a dress rehearsal with understudies for a better film that could have come out of this movie.
Overall, the plot is noticeably Frankensteined from Trolls, Monsters Inc, Toy Story and other classic animation films. Which is kind of funny in a movie about ugly dolls. However, it doesn’t make for a creative, fresh film about being yourself. There’s no doubt that the conversation parents can have about the deeper meaning behind this film on the car ride home will be worth it, but you can’t escape the ugly truth!

"Missing Link" Review: Something's Missing Alright!
You may not know the name Laika Studios, but you know their work. Movies like Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls and Kubo and the Two Strings are some their beloved prior films. While Missing Link is just as gorgeously handcrafted as their previous works, its missing the magic to elicit the warm fuzzies like its predecessors.
Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman) is an explorer and investigator of myths and monsters in the age of global exploration. He is fearless in his quest to find these creatures, but can’t seem to keep an assistant in doing so. After his latest assistant walks out, he receives a letter from Mr. Links (Zach Galifianakis), who turns out to be Big Foot. With the west being conquered by pioneers in North America, Mr. Links desires to find his long lost relatives, the Abominable Snowmen in Shangri-La. Not knowing how to get there, Frost and Links visit Adelina Fortnight (Zoe Saldana), a widow whose husband possessed a map to the mythical place.
Writer/Director Chris Butler is a master craftsman of the optics of the film. His attention to detail make for an entertaining watch. The light by the fireplace produces a warm orange on characters’ faces, an aerial shot in which the heroes travel by horse and carriage shows the shadows of the horses galloping along beside it, and the facial movements of the characters are so spot on that you can’t help but be swept away by the performances. The marriage between the actors’ delivery of lines to the crafting of their animated image is perfection! There is a grandmother the cast meets on the way to Shangri-La who is perhaps the funniest character in the film, but Butler shows her with a constant head tremor. It’s such a small detail, but it makes her character so authentic. The craftsmanship of the film must be honored!
While the visuals and voice acting is amazing in this film, the story is just plain dull. The screenplay doesn’t rise above stereotypical fare. You could argue that this is a film about the characters finding themselves on the harrowing journey to Shangri-La, but that’s boiler plate marketing. The screenplay gives little to care about by investing in the characters we see. So much of the film consists of watching the set production and waiting for the next bit of humor to break up the stodgy storyline.
Generally, I could give the stamp of approval for your kids enjoying the film more than you will, but I’m not so sure this time. The script and its’ jokes strike somewhere in between humor for kids and adult humor (and that doesn’t equal teenage humor), thus it gets lost in the middle of nowhere. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s some missing link to making this film great! As beautiful as it is, it may be best to catch this one after it gets out of the theaters.

"Dumbo" Review: The Film Doesn't Soar
2019 promises to give us a slew of live-action films based off of some classic property. Aladdin, The Lion King and Dumbo are the titles parents can get ready to take their kids to. As a parent of young children, I now realize that some films my parents took me to growing up is another example of their love because sitting through it must have been hard to endure. Dumbo is retribution for their sacrifice, and I can only hope the rest of the year doesn’t exact more vengeance!
Danny DeVito runs the Medici Bros circus as Max Medici. His circus of outsiders travel from town to town in 1919 by train, bringing fun to the towns they stop in. Amongst the circus family is Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his two children: Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins). They take care of the elephants, which includes Dumbo, the newest addition to the clan. Dumbo has oversized ears and they quickly learn that the tickle of a feather can make him fly.
Once the word is out that there’s a flying elephant in the world, the chance to bring the spectacle under his own circus brings tycoon V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) running. He buys the Medici circus and pushes to make Dumbo the main event. You can imagine the heroism that has to follow in order to keep Dumbo safe.
This film comes down to casting and it’s hit and miss. Danny DeVito is great, but he gets put into a closet literally and figuratively after Vandevere takes over. Keaton enjoys playing Vandevere a little too much, becoming a caricature of the evil villain missing a mustache but with a bad toupee. Farrell’s southern accent is absolutely ridiculous, and Nico Parker’s delivery of her lines is equally cringeworthy.
The first half of the film feels like Disney got director Tim Burton to succumb to their bright and beautiful ways, but once Dumbo goes under Vandevere control the film takes a darker tone. Cinematographer Ben Davis changes the bright and hopeful lighting scheme to a dark and oppressed washed out dark blue. There’s no doubt that Burton is able to capture some of the wonder and awe of the circus through his set pieces and swells in the score, but that’s the best part of the film and it’s not enough.
My kids loved the film, and I was shocked at the number of adults in the theater without kids as well. So this film will definitely have an audience of kids or adults looking for a nostalgia fix from the 1941 animation. If it’s an indication of the films we’re about to see this year take a deep breath and make sure you’re seats are reclinable because at least your money will go toward getting a comfortable spot to watch the back of your eyelids.

"Ralph Breaks The Internet" Review
When Wreck-It Ralph was first released in 2012, it quickly became one of my favorite animated Disney films to come out within the last few years. It was innovative, the video game references I grew up with were fun, and it was a perfect starring vehicle to utilize the talents of John C. Reilly. When Disney announced that a second one was coming, it was one of the films I was looking forward to watch this year. After watching the film, even though there are some bumps on the road, I’m happy to report that Ralph Breaks the Internet is a solid sequel.
Set six years after the events of the first film, Ralph (Reilly) and his best friend Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) find themselves traveling to the world of the Internet after Mr. Litwak (Ed O’Neill) recently installs a WiFi connection in his arcade. When a mishap causes a player to accidentally break the controller to Sugar Rush, Ralph and Vanellope have just days to find the part and raise the money before Mr. Litwak pulls the plug on Sugar Rush for good. Along the way, Ralph and Vanellope come across a game called Slaughter Race, which sparks Vanellope’s interest and causes her to question if she wants more to life.
First off, the animation in this film is still absolutely gorgeous to look at. Returning director Rich Moore and co-director Phil Johnston (who co-wrote the first film) and their animators do a good job in separating the different worlds and characters apart to have each stand on their own. Conceptually, Moore and Johnson’s visualization of the Internet to make it a futuristic and Utopic view, works well. Initially, I was somewhat worried that the product placements in the film, since it takes place on the web, would be overbearing or just be paid advertisements for the various apps or websites featured, but for the most part, the filmmakers don’t shove it down your throat, or have the story be compromised with the apps or websites that agreed to be in this film.
Since this is a Disney release, luckily, they don’t overdo the synergy of their various franchises that are featured in this. You can believe the hype you’ve been hearing about Vanellope meeting the Disney Princesses. In an amazing act of genius they got all of the actresses to come back and the banter includes a fun joke at another animation company that Disney owns. The film really begins to hit its groove when Ralph and Vanellope need to find the funds to get the new piece, and some of the skewing of the material is absolutely spot-on and extremely funny at times.
When we view sequels, we tend to see the same song and dance, rinse and repeat again. I appreciate that the screenplay that Johnston and Pamela Ribon concocted in trying to tell something different. If the first film was about how someone who is perceived as bad can become good, this one is about how you grow up and realize that you and your friend sometimes don’t share the same dreams and aspirations as one another and you both come to that crossroad, which is something that I can relate to from time to time. With how they handle it, it’s a nice message and this film wears its heart on its sleeves. Even though we see the Internet these days use for hate and vitriol, this highlights how sometimes the Internet can bring people together for good. Voice wise, the chemistry between Reilly and Silverman is still strong as ever, and they bring some new dimensions to their respective roles that can be quite effective at times. All the other voice actors were good in this and don’t feel out of place, including an uncredited Bill Hader as J.P. Spamley, a figure that Ralph and Vanellope meet along the way, and Gal Gadot as Shank, a racer in Slaughter Race. The cameos in this are fun as well.
Ralph does take a bit to actually get going. Since it’s introducing so many things that at times, it tends to be a little clunky, which is especially evident in the first act. For the 112-minute runtime that this has, Ralph in hindsight, could have been trimmed down in some places as the pacing hits a snag. There are some story threads that the filmmakers introduce that they don’t follow through on, and some of the characters from the first are barely in this, like Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer) and Sergeant Calhoun (Jane Lynch).
Overall, I enjoyed what Ralph Breaks the Internet brought to the table and what it was trying to accomplish. Reilly and Silverman give it their all, and the filmmakers were smart in having the sequel focus more on them and their growth. With the beating heart that this sequel shows, if they continue making films in this series, I’ll surely be there every single time. If you’re looking for something to watch with your family during this holiday season, you can’t go wrong with this. When you do, I would suggest staying until the end of the credits for something special that will surely bring a smile to your face. On that note, I would recommend watching this in the theater!

"The House With A Clock in its Walls" Review
The House with a Clock in its Walls is masterfully nostalgic; director Eli Roth reignites the forgotten appreciation Millennials have for Jack Black. Even though the film is technically created for kids, I was on the edge of my seat throughout the movie. The film is based on a mystery fiction novel written by John Bellairs in 1973. The House with a Clock in its Walls certainly pays homage to the book in its own unique ways, however books are rarely fully realized when adapted to the big screen. The story is not quite the same as the book, but the movie makes up for that with polished special effects, great acting, and multi-generational humor. The movie is reminiscent of such films like A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Golden Compass, and even Goosebumps.
Lewis Bernavelt (Owen Vaccaro) is a recently orphaned 10 year old who moves to the fictional town of New Zebedee, Michigan to live with his uncle Jonathan (Jack Black). His uncle happens to be a warlock with a best friend, Mrs. Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett), who is a powerful witch. This hodgepodge of characters form a makeshift family on a mission to do one thing, find a way to stop the doomsday clock left by an earlier tenant of the house!
The first notable thing about the film is the casting, Jack Black does an amazing job in his role as the creepy, misunderstood uncle. This role is the Jack Black we’ve come to expect to see on screen through and through; he creates such an interesting character within the storyline, it’s hard to look away. Owen Vaccaro steals the show with his ability to cry on cue, competency with linguistics, and charming character. He is the typical nerdy, misunderstood kid, but he certainly proves himself time and time again. Finally, sure to be a character favorite (she was mine) is Florence Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett), the platonic friend of Jack Black; their friendship is hilarious and wonderful. They truly care about each other as friends but they don’t waste a moment without dishing out a good insult towards one another. Overall, the acting truly carries the film, and the relationships between all of the actors feels genuine, adding to their creativity.
Alongside the quarrels and quips between characters, the storyline is incredibly intriguing. The plot is solid and engaging, yet you can never assume what will happen next. The House with a Clock in its Walls is a story that cannot be forgotten (not recommended for kids under age 8), and yet it is filled with humor for different generations. At one point during the screening I saw, an audience member nearby noted out loud that there were more adults laughing at the jokes within the audience than kids which truly speaks to the talent behind the writing by Eric Kripke. As was mentioned before, the character interactions are incredible, and the writing can partially be thanked for this. The actors are able to create palpable, genuine relationships on screen with the dialogue; some of the most impressive acting came from Owen Vaccaro, simply because of the way he “used his words,” (this is even commented on within the film).
The House With a Clock on it's Walls uses a variety of cinematic elements to give an entertaining final product. The production of the film is well thought out, the creativity shines, and the plot doesn’t falter. The dedication of the actors alongside the great writing help make these characters memorable. As stated earlier, the film is incredibly nostalgic for Millennials; it relates to so many movies in the past that are now reminiscent of our childhood. Hopefully, Jack Black’s role sparks the same sentimental value for the next generation that he created in past films like School of Rock; this film definitely has potential to become a Jack Black cult classic.

"Teen Titans Go! To the Movies" Review
I’ll be up front with you, I’ve never watched an episode of Teen Titans Go!. I’m aware of the Cartoon Network animated series that began airing in 2013, and that people have different opinions about the show itself. I’ve only seen clips here and there, so watching the film adaptation of the series was my first time experiencing this property. Other than the clips I’ve seen and the trailers, this film piqued my interest when it was announced that they got Nicolas Cage to voice Superman, since he was slated to be Superman in Tim Burton’s planned Superman Lives movie twenty years ago before it collapsed. Not knowing what to expect, it certainly won me over with this: Teen Titans Go! To the Movies is a much more enjoyable experience than last fall’s Justice League, and some parts in this film had me howling in laughter.
Every superhero left and right has his or her movie. In this world, you’re not considered a real superhero until you get a movie made about you. Robin (Scott Menville) dreams of having his own film, but none of the superheroes take him or the Teen Titans, which consist of Beast Boy (Greg Cipes), Cyborg (Khary Payton), Raven (Tara Strong), and Starfire (Hynden Walch) seriously. Popular film director Jade Wilson (Kristen Bell) tells the team that in order to get a film made about their exploits, they need to find an arch nemesis. The Titans might find one in Slade (Will Arnett, who also produced the film), who has nefarious plans of his own.
One of the things that I enjoyed about this film is how they sendup all the comic book films that have populated the multiplexes lately. In a sense, whereas the Deadpool films are aimed at an adult crowd, this caters to the kids. Like with last year’s The LEGO Batman Movie, directors Peter Rida Michail and co-creator Aaron Horvath (who also wrote this with co-creator Michael Jelenic) incorporated references of past DC films, TV shows, and comics. No characters are safe, from Batman (there’s a killer joke that WB will basically make any film that’s remotely related to him), Superman, and Wonder Woman, to the most obscured, like the Challengers of the Unknown. While the jokes are mostly catered to the younger demographic, the filmmakers get away with some extremely funny dark humor that adults can appreciate.
Unlike the tone that’s on display with some of the past DC films, this film knows exactly what type of film it’s trying to be. It’s self aware, and it embraces its roots as a film geared towards children, which is to entertain us for 88 minutes. There is an interesting dynamic in which the directors and animators switch up the animation style whenever it drifts away from the reality of the film universe which helps enhance the story. It feels a bit like a cross between Looney Tunes with a dash of anime. Voice wise, the dynamic between the Titans is good, and you can hear the years of teamwork and how they care for one another in their vocal acting. Arnett once again nails the over masculine type character as Slade, and how over the top he portrays it. The cameos did there part, and Cage as Superman was perfection in my eyes. It makes you wish that he would get another opportunity to voice Superman down the road. Also, the songs are catchy enough that you might have a hard time getting them out of your head.
As for any drawbacks, there’s not enough meat to the bones, and it basically feels like a feature length episode of the series. Even though it runs at 88 minutes, at times, it was as if the filmmakers were trying to figure out ways to pad out the runtime by stretching a comedy bit out or throwing things against the wall until something sticks. As the old saying goes, they had style over substance. There isn’t enough plot, and the film doesn’t go any deeper than you may anticipate going into it. Maybe it was because of the PG rating, but I was a little surprised that the name Deathstroke never gets mentioned once (since that’s Slade’s name in the comics). Finally, the DC animated short that precedes the film, involving the DC Super Hero Girls, felt a little off and choppy.
Overall, if you’re a fan of the show, chances are you will have a lot of fun with this film. Even if you haven’t watched the show at all, give it a shot. I know I’m not the target audience for this film, but I’ll admit that it has its charm to it, and I was laughing more than I should have. The real question is whether watching this film will lead to me and others to watching the series? There’s a strong likelihood that newbies like myself, may check out at least a few episodes. Be sure to stay around until the mid-credits, because some of the audience members around me lost their minds when it occurred. In terms of DC Animated Movies, I think The LEGO Batman Movie is better, but hey, it seems like Warner Animation may have a better grasp on the DC characters than the live action division. If you were looking something fun to watch this weekend with your family, or just a fan in general, I would recommend checking this out.
