The Purge Trailer

Mom always said the scariest movies weren't monster films like "Godzilla", or "It" because they aren't based in reality. The scariest films are based on things that could actually happen. For me, one of those films is "The Strangers". The last line...because you were home. Chilling!

Along comes "The Purge". From the trailer it has a similar premise to Strangers, and it looks like a suspenseful survive the night thriller. The film stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey and is due in theaters June 7th.

Synopsis:

In the year 2022, the United States is prospering with an unemployment rate at 1% and crime at an all-time low. To keep this prosperity the government creates an annual 12-hour period from the evening of June 7 to the morning of June 8 in which all criminal activity, including murder, becomes legal. During this time, police and hospitals suspend all assistance services and execute citizens who refuse to participate. This event, known as The Purge, is designed to serve as a catharsis for the American people, giving them a chance to vent all negative emotions however they desire, with the ultimate goal of keeping unemployment and crime at extremely low levels for the rest of the year. During this night of violence and crime, a stranger screaming for help is let into James Sandin's fortified house during their yearly lock down. The family is then forced into conflict between their beliefs of right and wrong, and a sequence of events involving the stranger's pursuers puts the family's chances of survival in danger.

The Michael J. Fox Show

bttf_poster.jpg

America is built on underdog, comeback stories. This is one that I found that really made me smile. Not that Michael J. Fox is an underdog but this definitely would be a comeback to TV. Remember when he disclosed that he was suffering from Parkinson’s disease back in 1999? It seemed as though his on-camera acting career was over. He semi-retired in 2000, to do voiceover work, write books, and promote The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

As of late, Fox has stepped back into acting, playing characters that address his disability directly instead of trying to work around it. He played himself on Curb Your Enthusiasm, with Larry worrying that Fox was exploiting his Parkinson’s to manipulate those around him. On The Good Wife, he recurs as lawyer Louis Canning, who has another neurological disorder he uses to his advantage.

And now Fox takes on a starring role in the upcoming NBC sitcom The Michael J. Fox Show.  The series seems to follow Mike Henry returning to work after leaving his job due to complications from Parkinson’s. I was thinking it may be an unintentional tear jerker watching Fox play the role, but it's actually quite funny! Based on the trailer it seems as though the sitcom is on to something. If it can continue to use the humor in disability as a fact of life, they just may have gold. To me, in doing this, Fox is able to be a hero not just to the Parkinson's community but anyone with a disability or what seems like bad odds against them in achieving something. That courage is awesome and worthy of celebration!
