Today I talk with co-director and editor of the documentary The Commons, Suki Hawley. The documentary covers students at UNC’s flagship campus in Chapel Hill as they take to the commons to demand the removal of “Silent Sam,” a Jim-Crow-era Confederate statue. With the specter of the Charlottesville tragedy hanging thick in the air, the confrontation takes on a life of its own. I also talk with the director of SXSW Film, Janet Pierson. Janet and I talk about what you can expect to see at this year’s Film Festival and how to best navigate it!

The documentary is about the dismal number of women directors working in Hollywood, but covers successful women directors, their career paths, struggles, inspirations and hopes for the future.
