Happy Friday my people! I was honored to be featured in WTOP’s Black History Month highlighting of black men and women doing groundbreaking work to better the community. Shoutout to Rob Woodfork and Jason Fraley! Check out the link to the article below, but I’m glad that my work with this show and the DC Black Film Festival is making a difference in the community both locally and at large.

Today I talk with co-director and editor of the documentary The Commons, Suki Hawley. The documentary covers students at UNC’s flagship campus in Chapel Hill as they take to the commons to demand the removal of “Silent Sam,” a Jim-Crow-era Confederate statue. With the specter of the Charlottesville tragedy hanging thick in the air, the confrontation takes on a life of its own. I also talk with the director of SXSW Film, Janet Pierson. Janet and I talk about what you can expect to see at this year’s Film Festival and how to best navigate it!

We talk about her film which focuses on Santa’s Workshop, one of the first theme parks in the U.S. battling a changing economy and digital world. I also talk with Amy Adrion, director/producer of Half The Picture. The documentary is about the dismal number of women directors working in Hollywood, but covers successful women directors, their career paths, struggles, inspirations and hopes for the future.

Happy Friday folks! This week I have a jam packed episode! I talk with Picture Lock contributor Julia Moroles about her love for documentary filmmaking, and her latest documentary. Julia also talked with Gabe Polsky, director of In Search of Greatness about his latest documentary, which is in theaters today! I talk with Chief Instigating Officer, Dan Brawley, of the Cucalorus festival about what we can expect to see next weekend at the festival that is still standing strong in it’s 24th year in Wilmington, NC. Which is awesome because the city was hit hard by Hurricane Florence this year. So mark your calendars for November 7th-11th film lovers!

If my talk with Dan isn’t enough to convince you to check it out, my conversation with one of my new best friends, Jenna Laurenzo surely will. Jenna is the director of Lez Bomb, a hilarious new comedy about coming home and coming out. The film will be playing at the Cucalorus film festival, which is quite coincidental because at the time we recorded, I had no idea!
